Affecter “Predicting Social Media”
Hello my name is Patrick McConlogue and it all started with a completely epically embarrassing video my 14-year-old self uploaded on YouTube which got 100,000 hits in 10 hrs, for no reason!--or so I thought. Ever since, I have been obsessed with hits and fascinated with the concept of ‘viral’. Affecter is the result of this continuing passion.
Fusing predictive models from a stock market analyses formula I developed in 2010 and the social timeline in Facebook, Affecter is a digital trainer for the digital you. Utilizing the Affecter Facebook login, you begin your experience with an indepth look at the digital you, covering the topics you like and the friends who follow you the most. Once this brief overview is done, you can choose to jump into the exclusive Affecter Marketplace for deals on the hottest new gadgets you or your friends have already been talking about, or you can dive right into the Affecter Trainer and be coached on relevant social techniques, words, and news to raise your social know-how.
Behind the seen the Affecter engine rests within Facebook operating to hand heavy formulas based on your interactions. When the Affecter engine makes a mistake (which we promise it will!) you can always coach it by “disliking” suggestions for new friends/products/services. As the brain of Affecter gets to know you, it will begin making predictions like “You will have 900 friends in 180 days” or “Learning more about Justin Bieber will make you 30% more impactful among your friends (kidding!).”
Beyond the exclusive deals, in depth analytics, and predictions, Affecter is a simple community for people who care about the digital impact and image they are creating. Affecter is there to help promote, challenge, and form the new digital you.
Affecter raised $100,000 in pre-valuation capital from the GWC Group in May 2011. Construction of a BETA began in June 2011 in Shanghai, China. Upon return to the states Patrick McConlogue, Founder of Affecter, created pitch decks, business plans, designed the copyrighted Affecter web interface, iOS/Android/Blackberry app, and trademarked Affecter Inc. within the US and the state of California. The team was comprised of Kimberly Duffy, (co-founder of eMusic) CTO and President of GWC, Jason Saffran, (VP of Woven Media) Vice-President and David Fischette (Primary Investor) Chairman of the Board. The Advisory Board consisted of Brandon Chapman (VP of the Grammys).
In November of 2011 the project lost steam after the lead developer of the Shanghai firm abruptly left and the Affecter team was forced to evaluate reinvestment in an unfinished workflow despite growing pressure in the field from Klout, PeerIndex, and Kred. After three months of seeking new capital, the team called the project and let Affecter sail on March 9th 2012.
Despite not having Affecter, which I feel I really got to know--almost like a child, the experience and friendships made during the trek are invaluable. In this way, when it was over, the loss was replaced with excitement for the future, a future certainly benefiting from the experience.
